Update: Aunt Na

Our family is so overwhelmed and blessed by all of your prayers, texts, Facebook messages, tweets, Instagram comments, visits, calls...but mostly your prayers.  We believe there are hundreds of people praying across the US and around the world.  And for those of us who know the Lord, we know how powerful prayer is.

Several of us gathered yesterday at my grandparents house to #prayforna and of course talk about all the things we love about her.  Gramma told us the story of when she asked Jesus in her heart when she was just a little girl...listening to my Grampa play "Jesus Loves Me" on the pipe organ in their home.

My Dad commented on how our perspective through these last few days is so different from the world's because we (our family) know Jesus, because we've trusted Him for salvation, and because we ultimately know that someday we'll be with Him forever in heaven.  He said something to the effect of, "Why would we wish upon a star when we trust the Creator of them?"

I have to say that all of that doesn't make this situation easy.  Of course if we could take it all away we would.  But we know that Aunt Na's life is in the Lord's hands.  She's trusted Him for salvation.  And so we know that if He did take her, it wouldn't be goodbye, just see ya later...or ta-ta, as Aunt Na would say.

And then our family prayed together.  We prayed ultimately for healing, but also that the Lord would be glorified through all of this.

And we know that He already has.  On Saturday night after the accident, the high school youth group Aunt Na was snowboarding in Tahoe with went ahead with their pre-planned worship meeting.  This is the awesome part...6 kids prayed to receive Christ and were baptized immediately!  Amazing!  I can't wait for Aunt Na to wake up and hear that.  She's going to be stoked.

My Mom, Uncle Warren, Aunt Jan, Aunt Janet, and now sis, Katie are all at the hospital with Aunt Na.  I talked to my Mom for awhile today and she said they're all encouraged today.  Aunt Na was yawning a lot, squeezed the hand of the nurse, and when Aunt Jan asked her to blink her eyes, she did (with them closed)!!  She's moving the right side of her body a lot more than the left, but the neurologist said that goes along with where the injury is in her brain.  And so we're hopeful, she's going to wake up soon.

And we're Hope-Full.  That the Lord's good, pleasing, and perfect will is being played out in all of our lives.

Please continue to pray!  We know you are and will continue, and we thank you in advance.  Here are some things you can specifically pray for:
*Aunt Na to wake up!
*Complete healing of her brain
*My grandparents.  It's so hard for them to not be at the hospital with her.  They need a lot of peace and comfort.
*My mom.  I know it's so hard for her to see her baby sister like this.  I can't imagine.
*Uncle Warren.  He's the decision-maker for Aunt Na's care in the hospital.  For wisdom and strength.
*Aunt Janet.  She needs wisdom to know how long to stay at the hospital.  She's a teacher and is missing school this week.  Pray for peace when she makes her decision.
*Aunt Jan & Katie.  To have strength to continue to be an encouragement to the family at the hospital.
*The rest of the family who's not at the hospital, that we can just keep life as normal as possible at home for the family while they're away.
*The 6 kids who prayed to receive Christ.  That they would be surrounded by strong Christians to come along-side them, to encourage and disciple them.
*For those who's hearts are being stirred by this event.  That they would see that Jesus is the Ultimate Healer, Life-Giver, and Way to Eternal Life.  That many more would give their lives to Christ because of the testimony of Na.

Aunt Na

For a few hours today we thought we might lose a family member.  My aunt was in a snow boarding accident earlier today and the message we got was that she was life flighted to the ICU in critical condition.  She's intubated, not breathing on her own.  Getting that phone message from my crying Grams was enough to about send me over the edge.

"Aunt Na??  Really??  Wait how can this be..." have been the thoughts going through my head.  And I said to Steve, "It really is up to the Lord when He wants to take us.  We just have no idea when or how."  And then we started praying.

Facebook pages were immediately updated by several of us.  Instagram, Twitter, asking people to pray.  Texts and messages started going out.  I've been afraid to call anyone for fear of just crying on the phone.  So right now, I'm thankful for technology.

But people are praying.  People everywhere.  People who don't even know my aunt, and especially those who do.  Because that's how the body of Christ works.  We lift one another up and take on each others burdens.  And we begin to think about the fragility of life.  And we say, "I love you," a few more times to those we hold dear.  And we don't do laundry or watch TV because it seems so frivolous at the time.

But we do continue to pray.  And think of scriptures that talk about life, death, the Lord's perfect timing and how we may never have the answers.

I wish you could all know my aunt.  She's like the coolest person I know.  And if you know her, you agree.  And if you know her and I say to you, "My aunt is cooler than yours," you just nod your head in agreement.  She rock climbs...not just like regular rocks, but like the face of Half Dome in Yosemite...for 3 days and 2 nights.  She backpacks, wake boards, mountain bikes, plays the guitar, softball, & basketball, sings, shoots squirrels with a bow & arrow, rides horses, raises weird pets (snakes, chipmunks, opossums, iguanas, deer) changes her own oil, and is willing to try just about anything.

But what she'd really want you to know about her is that she loves Jesus.  And she'd want you to know that He loves you, too.  That's what it always comes down to with her.  If you were hanging out, she'd want you to know that.  And she'd tell you.  She'd tell you about the freedom she has in Christ because He died for her...and you.  And WHEN she gets back to doing her regular activities, you should ask her about it.  Because she'd love to tell you.  And she'll tell you how the Lord watched over her today and protected her...even though she's still not awake, and we still don't know the full extent of her injuries, I believe she will be back to her regular activities before we know it.  And we'll give God all the glory.

And if she doesn't recover, we'll still give God the glory.  We don't always understand why He does what He does and why He allows certain things to happen.  But we still praise Him through it, trusting it's part of His perfect Plan & Purpose.

Philippians 1:6, "Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."

Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

Please continue to pray.  We'll give updates as we find things out.  Hug those you love a little tighter. And give God the glory for the good things He's done in your life.

#8

I've made a list of my top 10 favorite things & memories from 2013.  These are not in any particular order, just depends on what I feel like writing about...so here's #8:

Celebrating is something our family really likes to do & do well.  We don't have a very big extended family, but we love to celebrate everyone's birthdays in some way.  Now that our family has grown through marriages & babies, we combine birthday parties...which just makes it more fun!  Since Claire & my cousin's boy are just 2 weeks apart, they usually get to celebrate their birthdays together & this last year we celebrated the big FIVE with a pool party!

Swimming is always better with friends!

On the night before her actual birthday, Steve & I decorated Claire's room, so she woke up to balloons & streamers everywhere!

Then we ran off to the DONUT store for her favorite kind of sugary breakfast.  Oh yum!

Daddy's favorite little Goof Nugget.

Later in the day we headed to the San Diego County Fair...Claire's request.

Her highlight was holding the baby pig...oh my...she still talks about wanting one for a pet!

A few days after her actual birthday, we went to the American Girl store in LA.  Oh my word...I don't know who was more excited, me or Claire!  It was 2 stories of pure doll magic!  We can't wait to go back again.

She chose Julie, but renamed her Sarah because she looks like Auntie Katie's friend, Sarah. :)

I'm so thankful for our sweet girl & the 5+ years we've been a family.  She's the biggest blessing and joy in our lives.  We love how smart, caring, thoughtful, silly, brave, & loving she is.  Her biggest desire in life is to be a big sister...hoping the Lord blesses her with becoming one soon!

**My friend had just taken her daughter to the AG store a week or two before us and her advice to me was to go online and pick out the doll Claire wanted before going to the store!  Great advice....and I'd give that advice to anyone planning a trip there.  It just makes it a lot less overwhelming (for everyone) & easier to stay focused on the goal!

my word

The last couple years I've chosen a word to keep me focused for the upcoming year.  You can read about those words here.  I started praying several weeks ago about what word the Lord would give me for 2014...what did He want me to focus on?

An idea kept coming to mind, a word that I kept thinking of that I wanted to be more of.  But I wasn't thinking of it as my word of 2014.  Finally, one day during Christmas break, I had my long list of things I wanted to get done.  They weren't all things that needed to get done, they were just things on my agenda, things I could cross off my to-do list...honestly, I couldn't tell you what one of those things were off my list.

Claire kept asking to go to the park, play dolls, color, do puzzles...all the things she likes to do with other people.  Steve kept talking to me about some things he'd been thinking about, things that weren't so important to me, but obviously were important to him.  I kept telling both of them, "In a minute..." or "Let me just get these couple things done," and at the end of the day, I realized the things on my list were accomplished, but I hadn't spent time with those I love most.

Well, of course I'd spent time with them...we'd had meals, gotten ready together, engaged in extremely casual conversation...but I hadn't been intentional in my time with them.  I hadn't put them at the top of my priority list.  All my to-do's seemed much more important at the time.  But what was truly most important was being intentional in my relationships, not my silly list of to-do's...again, I couldn't tell you one thing that was written on that list!

So my word(s) for 2014 is to be intentional....in my marriage, as a mom, sister, daughter, friend, teacher, Christ follower.
